Despite all its problems and issues, the Apple iPhone has constantly been breaking its own sales records with each quarter. All the criticism in the world, whether it’s the faulty antenna or the alleged susceptibility of its glass construction, doesn’t seem to make a dent in sales. Apple is set to announce its earnings on October 18, and it looks like the company might be ready to disclose yet another record in iPhones sold.

WSJ: Verizon to sell iPhone in 2011, fifth generation iPhone is in the works

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/06/wsj-verizon-to-sell-iphone-in-2011-fifth-generation-iphone-is/
We've been to this rodeo before (a few times, actually), but the smoke that leads to fire is getting far harder to ignore. Following a Bloomberg report in June that a Verizon iPhone was on track for a January 2011 release as well as independent confirmation from John Gruber, Yukari Iwatani Kane from The Wall Street Journal is now sounding mighty confident that the aforementioned plans are true. According to various people "briefed by Apple," Jobs and Company will begin "mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year." It'll rely on a key Qualcomm chip as well as a CDMA radio, but curiously enough, there's nary of a mention of LTE in this report. In closely related news, it's bruited that Apple is also developing a separate iPhone model, though it's unclear how soon VZW will be able to grab the fifth generation edition. 'Course, it's not exactly the shocker of the year to hear that Apple's toiling on a new iPhone without a dubious antenna design, but the real question is this: will the Verizon iPhone beat AT&T's elusive white iPhone 4 to market? Inquiring minds would love to know.WSJ: Verizon to sell iPhone in 2011, fifth generation iPhone is in the works originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 14:25:00 EDT. NimbleStrong: the iPhone bartending-manga game

http://www.boingboing.net/2010/10/06/nimblestrong-the-iph.html

My daughter's first video game obsession? Nimblestrong, an iPhone game that teaches you how to bartend as you select, drag, and time your pours of various drink recipes into appropriate glasses - complete with garnish. All the while, you are encountering strange and exotic patrons as you train to become a hero master bartender.

It's actually one of the better examples of a video game being used to teach a specific skill that I've come across, with a good balance between twitch, recall, and narrative. There's just something deeply compelling - and rewarding - about successfully completing a complex drink and getting high scores from that anime vixen who thought you would screw it up.

The best part is the sound effects, and the particularly retro vidgame score. That, and the fact that my five-year-old now knows how to make 57 drinks.

MTV Unleashes an iPhone App to Combat Bullying

http://mashable.com/2010/10/04/mtv-over-the-line-bullying-app/
MTVs new iOS app Over the Line? wont defeat bullies through hand-to-hand combat in high school parking lots, but it can help teens learn how far is too far especially in the unruly and confusing digital frontier.Over the Line [iTunes link] is built on the existing web and Facebook app of the same name. If youre familiar with public confession sites like Nerve Dating Confessions, FML or Texts From Last Night it will look familiar to you, but its not just wanton voyeurism. Each teen user is invited to share a story about being bullied, harassed or otherwise disrespected by peers, and other users can vote whether their peers were over the line, under it, or hanging around right on it that is, whether it was bullying and harassment, acceptable behavior or just pushing the limits. Hopefully it will encourage young people to think critically about what theyre doing to their friends.MTV decided to launch the app during National Bullying Prevention month, which is also home to Dan Savages It Gets Better YouTube video project. Between this and the numerous inspiring videos out there, celebs and companies like MTV are hoping to discourage teens from committing suicide or taking other drastic action in response to bullying. The submissions cover a wide range of topics and kinds of bullying (and there are quite a few that are just random at best) but weve included a few examples of posts involving social networking or cyberbullying.Chris (15): there is a guy who keeps on taunting me because i am gay and it is getting over the limit. He sends fake messages to people pretending to be me, telling people i want to have gay sex with them and it is getting on my nervesAnonymous: I sent a text message to a friend telling her how good of a friend she was and how much i loved her, and she forwarded it to half of the people in our highschool telling them that i was a lesbian. None of the girls at my school talk to me anymore.Casidy (17): the guy i lost my virginity to secretly taped us on his webcam and i wasnt told until a couple months later when all of his friends asked me how i felt to be the mini pornstar of our small town school.Image courtesy of iStockphoto, mikdamMore About: abuse, App, apple, application, bullying, cyberbulling, digital abuse, facebook, facebook platform, fml, iOS, ipad, iphone, iPod Touch, mtv, national bullying prevention month, nerve dating confessions, social good, texts from last nightFor more Social Good coverage:Follow Mashable Social Good on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Social Good channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

Apple Approves a BitTorrent App for iPhone

http://mashable.com/2010/10/02/bittorrent-iphone-app/
A BitTorrent app called IS Drive has appeared in Apple's App Store for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, despite the company's past refusal to approve BitTorrent apps because they could be used for Internet piracy. The app is intended as a tool for managing ImageShackImageShack's torrent download service, but it can be adapted to manage downloads from other torrent sites too, including piracy hubs like IsoHunt and Mininova.BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol that shares the bandwidth load for large file transfers between large pools of users. It's often used for legit services like ImageShack, but it has also gathered a lot of negative attention because it's ideal for use by illegal file sharers.Apple has always blocked those apps for fear of allowing illegal activity that could undermine its music and video business on iTunes. Nevertheless, there are a couple possible explanations for IS Drive's emergence.Apple recently eased up its app store approval guidelines and the secrecy surrounding them in response to a lot of criticism. As a result, lots of apps that were previously not permitted have arrived Google Voice apps, for example. It's also possible that Apple didn't realize IS Drive is a BitTorrent app. IS Drive's developer told TorrentFreak, "I always had the thought that if I didnt call the app a 'torrent client,' Apple would probably let it through the review process." The app doesn't use the words "torrent" or "BitTorrent" at all, and it's simply a download manager. There's no torrenting on the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad running the app.IS Drive costs $4.99 in the App StoreApp Store, and the ImageShack sharing service comes loaded with either a monthly or daily fee.For more Mobile coverage:Follow Mashable Mobile on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Mobile channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad
