Griffin's Woogie turns iPhone into a plush

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/09/25/griffins-woogie-turns-iphone-into-a-plush/

When I was a kid, we just played with regular stuffed animals, and then Teddy Ruxpin came along and blew us all away. But kids these days, they get all kinds of cool stuff. Like look at this thing: they can stick an iPod touch in a "huggable plush accessory" called the Woogie, and run around with it to their heart's content, watching videos, playing with apps, and, I don't know, checking the weather, or whatever else it is that kids want to do on an iPod touch.

I especially like Griffin's selling point on this one -- this case is a bonus for the kids, who get a piece of technology that's a little more fluffy and friendly than Apple's sleek designs. It's a bonus for parents too, as it's much harder to lose or seriously break the iPod when it's wrapped in the big mass of furry green tentacles.

The $20 accessory even comes with its own app, where kids can preview Sesame Street books and, oh I don't know, check the weather or something. If I sound a little bitter, it's probably because I am: Teddy Ruxpin never ran Pocket Frogs for me.

Will You Try My Paper iPhone App?

http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/23/will-you-try-my-paper-iphone-app/
I see a lot of demos for a lot of apps. Today, in particular, I sat through a dozen back-to-back demos for startups launching at Disrupt next week. Some of them really blew me away. But none of them quite compare to the unexpected demo I got after my long day when I walked into a Palo Alto CVS to buy some toothpaste.

As I was waiting in the checkout line, a very polite Stanford college student named Parth Bhakta asked me if I would be willing to test out a prototype for an augmented reality mobile app. I was tired, but I am a supporter of higher education.

When I looked down at his hands, however, instead of an iPhone, he held a few pieces of paper with wireframe drawings in pencil. This was his app. I was supposed to pretend the paper was an iPhone screen and press the hand-drawn buttons as I shuffled through the flow. The idea is that you could point your camera at a magazine rack and get digital versions of the magazines, which you could preview on your iPhone and then purchase individual articles or the entire magazine. It made a lot more sense when he did it (see video).

iPhone and iPad Tips of the Week - September 23, 2010

http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/iphone_and_ipad_tips_week_folders_and_high_contrast_mode
This week we'll take a look at how handy folders can be in the iOS Dock, learn how to create a special Apple logo folder, and practice a few tricks that make iTunes 10 a bit more palatable, Plus, we'll teach you about the new iPhone Field Service test in iOS 4.1.How to Access More Apps in the Dock Using FoldersYou can create folders in iTunes 10 in your devices App panel or your iOS device running iOS 4 or higher by dragging one icon on top of another. A default name will be offered by iOS or iTunes 10 that you can accept or change afterwards. You can then add up to 12 different apps to any of these folders, available on any Springboard page. If you are making these changes in iTunes, make sure that you hit Apply to save your changes to your device. The result is shown in the picture below with the expanded version above showing the contents of the Books folder.Compatibility: iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iOS 4 or higher. How to Create an Apple Logo Folder in iOS 4.0Here's a handy little tip that will let you create a folder in iOS 4.0 that contains the Apple () Symbol. It will appear similar to this when you are done: 1. On your iOS device tap and hold any app and drag it on top of another app. This will cause iOS to create a folder containing the two apps.2. Change the default folder name to "AppleLogo", tap anywhere on the screen outside of the folder to close it, and press the Home button.3. Connect your device to your computer and perform a sync in iTunes 10.4. Select your device in iTunes 10 and then select the Apps tab for that device.5. Double-click on the folder you created in Step 2 to rename it.6. Select the text "AppleLogo", press Option-Shift-K to replace it with the Apple () Symbol. Then, you can add any other text if you want, and press Return to make the change.7. Click the Apply button to sync these changes to your device.Compatibility: iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iOS 4 or higher. How to Transform iTunes 10 into High Contrast ModeApple shocked millions of iTunes users by substituting low-contrast, one color icons in iTunes 10. Depending on your opinion, that change was one of the most unappealing updates made from iTunes 9 to iTunes 10. This hint will show you how to change the icon's appearance to give you a high-contrast side bar and listing pane (and, hey, change things up a bit). 1. Close iTunes 10 if it is open.2. Open the Terminal application located within the Applications/Utilities folder on your Macs hard drive.3. Enter the following command at the terminal prompt and press Return to turn on the high-contrast icons:defaults write com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable -bool TRUE4. Launch iTunes 10 and check out the new icons. If you like them there isn't anything else you need to do, but if you don't like them go to Step 5.5. Enter the following command at the terminal prompt and press Return to go back to the low-contrast icons:defaults write com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable -bool FALSECompatibility: Any Mac running iTunes 10.BeforeAfterBonus: Check Out Field Test Mode Returns in iOS 4.1There is a new limited version of the Field Test mode that has been reintroduced in iOS 4.1 after mysteriously disappearing in iOS 4.0. Simply launch the Phone app and dial *3001#12345#*, then press Call. Now you will see a number, representing the signal loss in dB, in the upper left side of the iPhone display. The signal bars on your iPhone will be replaced by a number. The higher the numeric portion of the negative number gets the worse your signal is. For example, -100 is worse than -79. If you tap on the displayed number the display toggles between displaying the number and the normal signal bars. The original field test mode in iOS 3.0 had a more robust set of features being reported, but signal strength is all you get in this version.Once you are done marveling over your signal strength press the Home button to exit. The signal strength bars will return momentarily.Compatibility: iPhone running iOS 4.1.Follow this article's author, David W. Martin, on Twitter.

An iPhone App For Asking Questions And Getting Nearby Answers

http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/22/ask-iphone/
The search engine Ask is about to submit an iPhone app to Apple designed for asking questions on the go. About a year ago, Ask returned to its roots as a place to ask and answer questions. Roughly 35 to 40 percent of all search queries typed into Ask are in the form of a question, versus maybe 6 to 9 percent for other search engines, according to Ask president Doug Leeds. Asks main search page centers around questions, and last July it launched a social Q&A feature that is still in private beta.
When the iPhone app launches in the next couple of weeks, anyone who downloads it will automatically be enrolled in Asks social Q&A beta. The app lets you ask questions either by typing them in or speaking them. It translates the voice to text and then tries to offer up the most likely answer right away, based on its index of more than 500 million question and answer pairs from sources across the Web, including other Q&A sites, FAQ pages, and more. Right below that best guess is an option to Ask the Community. Your question will then be routed to people in the beta who self-selected as being knowledgeable in related categories. (Before the end of the year, you will be able to ask your friends on social networks like Facebook and Twitter as well).
The Ask iPhone app, however, will become more interesting with its second release, which will include a feature called Nearby Answers. Based on your location, it will show you a list of places nearby. You can then select one of the places and ask a question about it. For instance, you can ask whether a restaurant is any good or how long the line is at the local movie theater. Your question will be routed to people nearby or people who have answered questions about those places in the past. You will also be able to see questions asked nearby, and adjust the distance from less than 1 mile to 50 miles using a slider. If you are a local know-it-all, that is a great feature.
Geo-targeted questions and answers could potentially be very powerful. The social Q&A space is extremely crowded right now with everyone from Yahoo Answers to and Aardvark (now part of Google) to startups like Quora. Adding a geo layer on top of Q&A could be a way for Ask to distinguish itself. Well ask Barry Diller (CEO of Asks parent company, IAC) about this when he comes to speak at Disrupt next week.

AT&T Not Concerned About iPhone Defections CEO Boasts That 80% Are Basically Trapped

http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/22/att-iphone-verizon/
At this point, my head is spinning. Earlier tonight, I wrote about how Verizon is still full-steam ahead on destroying the fabric of Android. Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, we have AT&T playing up the fact that they got a D- on a coverage test instead of an F. I seriously just cant decide which carrier is worse.
Earlier today, a study by Credit Suisse was released stating that 23 percent of iPhone users currently on AT&T would switch to Verizon if that carrier offered the phone. That number is slightly off from the 34 percent that was previously reported, but is still pretty massive. In total, that represents about 1.4 million customers that would jump ship from AT&T to Verizon without hesitation. But speaking today at the Goldman Sachs media and technology conference, Communacopia (yes, awful name), AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson had something interesting to say about possible defections.
Stephenson noted that 80 percent of AT&Ts iPhone base is either in family plans or business relationships with the carrier and that these type of customers tend to be very sticky. So essentially what hes saying is that those 80 percent of iPhone users probably wont leave even if they want to. Wow, thats a fresh approach.
The correct answer there would have been to say that AT&T will be doing all it can to improve its network and its customer service to ensure these people stay. And that theyre confident that they will. Or really, anything would have been better than an answer that basically amounts to we have them trapped.
But this may be my favorite part of Stephensons talk, from CNBCs report:
Stephenson emphasized the extended array of smartphones Apple subscribers can pick from, which reads as AT&T saying its not too reliant on Apple.
Does he really believe that iPhone users are going to switch to some other phone that AT&T offers instead of switching to the iPhone on another network? I mean, seriously?
This is basically like saying, well, we offer you crappy service on one of the most popular devices out there, so why dont you try this less popular device and stick with us?
Thats what we call a lose-lose situation. Brilliant.

In preparation for mass rollout, Square updates its iPhone and iPad apps

http://thenextweb.com/apps/2010/09/21/in-preparation-for-mass-rollout-square-updates-its-iphone-and-ipad-apps/
Square, the mobile payment system from Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, is beginning its march towards trying to become the leader in the mobile payment space.
Beset by several setbacks. First there were security concerns, followed by a lack of the Square card readers which connect to ones mobile device via the headphone jack. Those issues appear to be alleiviated with a mass roll-out of the service expected by the end of the summer, as other services, particularly Mophie, and Visa begin testing their own mobile payment solutions.
How will Square respond? Today we get a taste with the launch of an update to their iPhone app, version 1.3, which features:

Retina Display support for iPhone 4.
Improved first run experience.
Take cash payments even when offline.
Improved swiping reliability.
Improved tipping on iPad.
Improved support for multitasking on iOS 4.
Improved experience for unactivated users.
More accurate feedback when swiping incorrectly.
Fixes issues with geolocation on iOS 4.
And more.

Heres a video explaining Square for those unfamiliar with the product, click on the image to view the video in a separate window:

Are you a Square user? If youve signed up for the service, have you received your card reader? What appeals most to you about the service?

First Look: iPhone Add-on is a Revolutionary Product for Diabetics [Video]

http://www.fastcodesign.com/1662351/first-look-iphone-add-on-is-a-revolutionary-product-for-diabetics-video
Over 17.9 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, and anyone who's spent any time with one of them eventually gets to watch the painful, often thrice-daily process of checking blood sugar levels. It's a clunky process that's not only uncomfortable, it's also dangerous due to the potentially wide margin of error. But a new iPhone-compatible glucometer hopes to change all that by not only improving the blood collection process, but providing a safe and easy way to store and track data.

The new iBGStar glucose meter by Sanofi-Aventis, which will be demonstrated for the first time in the U.S. this Friday at USC's Body Computing conference, builds upon the existing diabetes-tracking technology WaveSense to simplify the collection and reporting of diabetes information. This new product can actually take blood samples using a device that plugs right into the iPhone.

[twistage 386c9d5babf38]

"This system replaces less accurate and more cumbersome stand alone glucometers that do not store or wirelessly transmit data," Dr. Leslie Saxon, a cardiologist at the USC Keck School of Medicine and founder of the Body Computing conference, tells Co.Design. "I believe this is a revolutionary product."

A small glucometer accurately reads blood sugar from a strip that a very small sample of blood is placed on -- "a prick that can hardly be felt," says Saxon, compared to the more painful stabs of conventional meters. And in fact, the technology used to measure the blood glucose, which doesn't rely on the conventional electric sampling, actually improves on traditional meters.

The design is smaller and more portable than most glucometers and even aesthetically matches the iPhone. A case can be fitted around the meter that wraps around the phone, keeping it extremely handy for users who are on the go. And like a text message from your body, a prompt can be programmed into the phone to serve as a reminder to check levels.

Using the iPhone app (coming soon) in conjunction with the monitor also allows the meter to do many things it could not do alone. Namely, the app allows the user to input various behavioral or environmental changes -- skipped a meal, exercised, recently injected insulin -- and can track that information along with the blood sugar levels. Some examples from the WaveSense diabetes tracking app, which powers the technology in this new glucometer, show how the information is plotted.

The data stored in the application can be accessed on the phone or the computer, allowing the user to always have the information at hand for a health care provider. Most importantly, says Saxon, the data can be programmed to be shared, which is critical for medical personnel if someone needs assistance, but also for the parents of children with diabetics.

Apple Approves Another Google Voice App for iPhone

http://mashable.com/2010/09/18/google-voice-iphone-apps/
The developer of another Google Voice app for iPhone "GV Mobile +" said that Apple approved his app today. Yesterday, GV Connect appeared on the App Store, marking another reversal of Apple's policy. Apple initially allowed Google Voice apps, but then banned them from the App Store because they "duplicated" existing iPhone features.Anyone familiar with Google VoiceGoogle Voice knows that's not a fair assessment. The apps provided a completely different spin on said features (the phone dialer, text messaging and others) through the Google Voice service, which allows you to create and use a virtual phone number of your choosing, chock full of unusual extras not currently possible on most cell phones or land lines. Those features include the ability to listen in on voicemails as they're being recorded, digital transcription of voicemails and calls, and assigning different rules or voice greetings to different contacts.Sean Kovacs, developer of GV Mobile + [iTunes link] assured everyone on TwitterTwitter that the app is coming (it hasn't appeared just yet), and promised to make it free for the night if it starts trending.Like GV Connect, GV Mobile + is priced at $2.99 and supports transcription and playback of voicemails, call initiation using your Google Voice number and most other features features you're looking for or have been using for a while if you have a jailbroken iPhone or an AndroidAndroid device. If Apple has really changed its policy on this, don't be surprised if you see a lot more of these coming.[Via The Boy Genius Report]For more Apple coverage:Follow Mashable Apple on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Apple channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

I Forgot How Bad The iPhone Is

http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/20/i-forgot-how-bad-the-iphone-is/
Ive been an Android-only user for just over a year now I actually ported my phone number to Google from my old iPhone switched over to Android so that I could take advantage of the deep integration that Google Voice has with that platform. I often switch phones, but Ive stayed on the Android platform over the last year.
I need to be familiar with all the different phones, though. And so I bought an iPhone 4 a couple of weeks ago to try it out. And I switched to using only the iPhone 4 when the third party Google Voice apps were re-approved by Apple over the last few days.
And wow, I forgot just how bad the iPhone is at calls. Everything else is perfect. The UI, the screen and the battery life are all hands down superior to any Android phone. But the thing just wont do calls properly.
First, the dropped calls. Nearly every call Ive had has ended by it being dropped. It doesnt matter how many bars I have, calls are dropped. Yesterday I had a five part conversation that ended every few minutes. Its particularly bad when youre driving (and yes Im using a headphone).
Im not so sure that long time iPhone users even remember what its like to have a phone call that doesnt drop at the end.
And the issue with the proximity sensor is absurd. Calls without a headset are constantly being put on hold or muted. Usually just before the call is dropped.
And finally, so many calls just arent coming through at all. I see the calls being missed on Google Voice, and I see the missed calls on my backup phones that I use, but the iPhone never rings.
This thing is eye candy but its a very flawed phone. Ill be going back to the Nexus One.

Download Foursqaure 2.0 App for iPhone

http://www.callingallgeeks.org/download-foursqaure-2-0-app-for-iphone/
After Facebook Places, now Foursquare have also released its new 2.0 version. The new version seems to be more promising and focuses majorly on To Do Lists and Add to My Foursquare.
According to Foursquare Blog:
When we started foursquare, we dreamed it would be much more than check-ins. We really wanted to build tools that would help people collect and share their real-world experiences.

The new Foursquare 2.0 version is having separate sections for both Tips and To-Dos. So that users can get more out of To-Do List like once you will add anything to your To-Do List, you will see a blue dog ear for that place and it will give you alert to nearby saved To-Dos and reminders about a saved To-Do when you check in at the specific venue. Foursquare is also upgrading the Tips experience. Tips will now be featured more prominently on venue pages, and Foursquare will be ranking Tips by popularity, as well as drawing users attention to Tips left by friends.
Another good feature added to Foursquare 2.0 is Add to My Foursquare. This feature helps you to add a place to your map which you can check out later. So whenever you are visiting a new place this new feature will connect what you find on the web with your To-do list and then you can easily read the review of that place on your iPhone.
Foursquare also said that it in USA, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Zagat, Time Out Chicago, Time Out New York, National Post, and New York magazine will be implementing buttons like Facebooks Like buttons to let you add to My Foursquare details.
The new 2.0 version is better than earlier one to provide you quick and easy to save the places you want to visit and save To-Dos for future. The new version is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. You can download Foursquare 2.0 from iTunes.
Check the new version of Foursquare and dont forget to share your feedback with us.

Behold, the "point your iPhone at a plane and know where it's headed" app!

http://www.boingboing.net/2010/09/20/behold-the-point-you.html

I haven't downloaded this yet, just noting the buzz around the blogs today: Plane Finder AR is an iPhone augmented reality app that promises to identify the origin and destination of any plane you might point your phone toward, overhead in the sky. A quick peek at the app's entry in the iTunes store shows some very upset user reactions: the $2.99 app only works with planes carrying ADS-B equipment, and only in areas where the app developer has equipment to read those signals. Sounds like Australia is the only country so far with full ADS-B coverage. Again, they're not using FAA data, so caveat downloader.
Still: I'll give it, oh, 30 minutes before a US lawmaker flips out over the app as a perceived terror threat.

Verizon Could Grab 23% Of AT&T's iPhone Users If Apple Ends Exclusivity (AAPL, T, VZ)

http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-att-credit-suisee-2010-9
A new survey from Credit Suisse says 63% of iPhone owners will stick with AT&T, even if it loses the exclusive right to sell the phone.
Where would AT&T iPhone owners go if given the chance? 23% will join Verizon, while 3% will go to Sprint, and 2% will go to T-Mobile.
While it might sound scary to think about AT&T possibly losing 37% of its iPhone users, Credit Suisse is bullish on AT&T, raising its price target on the telecom to $35, up from $27.
The investment bank says the damage of losing the iPhone is being overblown, making AT&T cheap. Also, AT&T will deliver strong earnings, a good dividend, and stock repurchases.Click here to see charts from Credit Suisse's presentation on AT&T losing iPhone exclusivity Join the conversation about this story See Also:Verizon-Flavored iPhone "Wheels Are Turning"Verizon iPhone Coming In JanuaryWhat iPhone? Apple Approves Another Google Voice App for iPhone

http://mashable.com/2010/09/18/google-voice-iphone-apps/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Mashable+%28Mashable%29
The developer of another Google Voice app for iPhone GV Mobile + said that Apple approved his app today. Yesterday, GV Connect appeared on the App Store, marking another reversal of Apples policy. Apple initially allowed Google Voice apps, but then banned them from the App Store because they duplicated existing iPhone features.Anyone familiar with Google Voice knows thats not a fair assessment. The apps provided a completely different spin on said features (the phone dialer, text messaging and others) through the Google Voice service, which allows you to create and use a virtual phone number of your choosing, chock full of unusual extras not currently possible on most cell phones or land lines. Those features include the ability to listen in on voicemails as theyre being recorded, digital transcription of voicemails and calls, and assigning different rules or voice greetings to different contacts.Sean Kovacs, developer of GV Mobile + [iTunes link] assured everyone on Twitter that the app is coming (it hasnt appeared just yet), and promised to make it free for the night if it starts trending.Like GV Connect, GV Mobile + is priced at $2.99 and supports transcription and playback of voicemails, call initiation using your Google Voice number and most other features features youre looking for or have been using for a while if you have a jailbroken iPhone or an Android device. If Apple has really changed its policy on this, dont be surprised if you see a lot more of these coming.[Via The Boy Genius Report]Reviews: Android, Google Voice, TwitterMore About: app approval, app store, apple, apple app store, apps, Google, Google Voice, iphone, voice over ip, voipFor more Mobile coverage:Follow Mashable Mobile on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Mobile channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad
