Apple Continued To Lose U.S. Marketshare Despite Spike From iPhone 4 Sales | mocoNews

Apples iPhone 4 did not give the company the bump in sales it needed to put Androids momentum in check. Instead, Apples smartphone marketshare in the U.S. dropped by 1.3 percent in the three months ended in July while Androids share grew by an impressive five percentage points, reports ComScore.

Verizons molestation of Android is the bane of its iPhone dreams.

Its been a strange couple of weeks in the life of this Android-living Google fanboy. OK, so Im not really a fanboy, but Im quite fond of Google products, and especially so when that product is the Android OS. But in the past couple of weeks, Ive seen actions from Verizon that make me sincerely question Googles lack of response to them.
Last week, the rumor started circulating that on the newest Verizon device from Samsung, Google was not only not the default search provider but also you couldnt even change it to be so. While that did raise my eyebrows a bit, I was reminded by someone close to the Google/Verizon situation that Verizon did indeed select Microsofts Bing as its search provider of choice some time ago.
Fair enough, I suppose. It doesnt keep you from going to Google.com in your phones browser, nor does it keep you from downloading a widget that will allow you to search on Google directly. I can deal with this.
Todays news, however, Im not so sure how to take just yet.
The news is that Verizon is building its own V-Cast Apps store. While weve long-ago become accustomed to the Verizon tab within the Android Market, the idea of a completely separate store is something else entirely. As with most major decisions, this could go really well or horribly, painfully wrong.
The Good
Verizon says that it will have a stringent policy for application approval. This is a very good thing. Its something that the Android Market needs, to some extent.
There will be a 70/30 split with developers for profits. Again, this is good. Devs need to make money and its another platform on which theyll be able to.
Youll be able to bill apps from the store to your Verizon phone bill.
The rest? Well, thats pretty much all of the possible good things to come out of this announcement.
The Bad
Fragmentation issues continue, as only devices running 2.2 or higher can use the store.
If you purchase an application from the store on one phone, there is no assurance that it will work on another.
The Really Really Ugly
While Imperturbedenough by the idea of having more crapware on my phone, what really bothers me is what this likely means, moving forward.
Carriers are already given the choice of pre-loading their own software and disabling some services on Android. Its part of the license agreement. However, there are certain core items to the devices that simply should be left alone, if only for the ethos of the Android operating system. The Android Market, for better or worse, should be one of those.
While its bad enough that youll have added software on your phone (and dont think for a second that Verizon wont go out of its way to default all purchases to its own portal), what happens when Verizon decides to build its own standardized UI to place on all of its Verizon devices?
In one fell swoop, Android users could very well be the unwilling recipients of over the air upgrades to their devices that would bring back the bloated junk that ruined years of great phones only 4 or 5 year ago.
But why would Verizon screw over its customers like this? Why would a walled garden be of any use to Verizon?
Money.
Apple has had phenominal success with the App Store, and rightly so. There are great applications in there, and they deserve to be purchased. Verizon, in its business interest, wants a piece of that pie. Sadly, Google has not yet (publicly) stood up to tell Verizon when to stop molesting its operating system, so Verizon will continue.
This is, conversely, the very reason that Verizon will not see the iPhone in its lineup. Jobs and company will not stand for its magical device to have bloated crapware on it, and Verizon wont open the door to something that it cant modify to its own tastes.
While there is still the argument of being able to root or jailbreak the devices, thats a level that the vast majority of Joe Consumer users wont ever touch. Its not even a valid response to the argument, because it leaves out everyone who isnt one of us.
So there is your future, Verizon iPhone hopefuls. If you want to see exactly why your precious device will never wear a big, red V, just take a look at Android.
For those of you Android users who are lucky enough to run a vanilla device, you might want to start reading about rooting so that you can keep your phone running the way it should.

Microsoft Holds Funeral for iPhone, Windows Phone 7 RTM

Microsoft really isn't that good at being snarky (witness the Bill Gates / Jerry Seinfeld ads), but they try. Windows Phone 7 has gone RTM, and thus the company decided it was time for a funeral, not for Windows 6.5 (which might have been appropriate), but for iPhone. The procession alone was silly enough, as is probably the thought of Windows...

iOS 4.1 On iPhone 3G Is No Freaking Better

Its been a week or so since iOS 4.1 finally came out, and boy has it been a long week. Steve Jobs made a point of stating that one of the goals of iOS 4.1 was to fix the user experience problems that its predecessor had caused on iPhone 3G devices. I was excited.
Now I am not. After waiting patiently for my phone to get better, after restarting it and updating it, and praying to it and asking it to be nice, after begging it to stop lagging, I give up. If this is a fix, I seem to have missed the boat.
Not that I am too overly shocked, as iOS is upgraded to do more my hardware is stuck in the sameposition, slowly but surely falling farther and farther behind. Still, it annoys me that my phone is a box of lag. I was hoping for a fix that was first rumored, and then promised. I would not be bitter otherwise.
Perhaps it is all Apples devious plan, but I feel like everything they do is forcing me to upgrade a very powerful phone in great working condition. Just a while ago an iPhone 3G was the paragon of cool, and even now still looks pretty damn sexy; it is in good order, its only a year old and has never been abused. I should not be having phone problems.
I just want it to work without driving me batty. Apple, could you let me turn things off so that it can run at acceptable levels?
What about you, is 4.1 a boon, or just more of the same?Image Credit

Google Voice apps returning to iPhone app store

It's been a long time coming -- now native Google Voice apps have finally returned to the iTunes App Store. This, after a fourteen month hiatus in which we saw an FCC investigation into the matter that culminated in a loosening of App Store restrictions. So far, we're only seeing the $3 GV Connect app in the store with GV Mobile coming sometime Saturday morning according to its developer, Sean Kovacs. No word on when the official Google Voice iPhone app will make its appearance, but surely it can't be long -- Phil must have had a chance to study the app he personally rejected didn't approve by now, right?Google Voice apps returning to iPhone app store originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 06:10:00 EDT. The “Verizon iPhone” Versus “The iPhone On Verizon’s Network”

If you think back to 2005, you'll remember that the Motorola RAZR phone was all the rage. Not entirely unlike the iPhone today, it was the sleek phone that everyone wanted. But if you happened to be on the largest carrier in the U.S., Verizon, you couldn't get one. Again, sound familiar?

It wasn't until just about a year later that a version (the V3c) finally came to Verizon. It was a long wait, but I was excited to finally have access to the device, I pre-ordered one the first day I could. When I finally got it, there were some surprises in store. Rather than having the same colorful user interface that my friends' RAZRs (on other networks) had, it had some god-awful red proprietary UI made by Verizon itself. It also came with the added bonus of having Bluetooth file transfer capabilities disabled by Verizon. And it was loaded to the brim with Verizon's V CAST garbage.

So while part of the wait was undoubtedly due to Motorola getting a CDMA version of the device ready to sell, a bigger part was likely Verizon negotiating and working to load the device up with their crapware. That doesn't speak well for the supposed Verizon iPhone.
